Anxiety disorders

I use Hypnotherapy for Anxiety in Warrington as just one treatment method to help you overcome your negative feelings. On this page you will find information about anxiety.

Probably the most common form of emotional complaint is that of anxiety, it can take many shapes and forms but the resulting effect is very negative for the individual.

There are many types of anxiety disorder which we will explore a little later but it should be pointed out early that this type of problem is very treatable with the correct type of therapy, you shouldn’t need to suffer with this and you deserve to be free from this type of negative condition.

A little anxiety is acceptable and in certain cases, it helps us to prepare to give our best performance, for example: A driving test or an interview.

However, people who suffer from anxiety disorder feel this sort of negative feeling all the time, it seems as if it will never go away. Some people believe that they are fixed this way for life and never capable of change, I hear this all the time, but it is so important to highlight that it is treatable, as long as you want that change, as long as you embrace it, then amazing things can happen.

There isn’t as much stigma attached to anxiety and other emotional disorders today, as more and more people become open to talking about it, even businesses take their role now and many offer help to their employees. So there is no better time than now, to sort out your problem, it’s never too late!

You don’t have to be a prisoner to your anxiety. There is help for anxiety out there! I operate from my consulting room in Warrington, Cheshire. Easy distance from Liverpool and Manchester. It is something you can overcome.

Lets take a look at the symptoms of anxiety

  1. Thumping heart, palpitations, or quickened heart rate
  2. Sweating
  3. Tremors or feeling shaking
  4. Feelings of shortness of breath or a smothering sensation
  5. Sensation of choking, sometimes a feeling of a lump in the throat
  6. Pains in the chest, tightness or discomfort
  7. Feeling nauseous or abdominal discomfort such as butterflies
  8. Dizziness, feeling wobbly or woozy, or even faint
  9. Feeling that things aren’t quite real or being disconnected from oneself
  10. Feeling that you may go crazy or lose control in some way
  11. Thanatophobia (a fear of dying)
  12. Pins and needles, numbness and muscle twitches
  13. Chills or hot flushes

It is sometimes very reassuring to check out your symptoms, as they can be quite frightening at first, and especially if the anxiety persists for weeks, months or even years.

One thing you should be aware of is that therapists are not allowed to diagnose! The only people who can diagnose are General practitioners and psychiatrists. However, if you have the above symptoms, and you only need a few from the above list, there is a good chance that you have symptoms of anxiety.

I see many people from Warrington and the surrounding area who have been suffering with some form of anxiety. I use CBT (Cognitive behavioral therapy) which is a way of understanding how our thoughts affect the way we feel (our anxiety symptoms) and visa-verse. Restructuring our patterns of thinking and challenging old beliefs can make quick and dramatic change in the way you feel. I also use hypnosis (hypnotherapy), and actually combine the two for a really positive outcome.

The great thing about hypnosis is that it allows you to feel a level of calm, which reduces the feelings of anxiety, and who wouldn’t want that? In hypnosis I can help you learn certain techniques to reduce your anxiety. Also, the unconscious part of your mind becomes much more receptive to suggestion. If we suggest certain things to the unconscious mind and compound them, there is more chance of change.

There are many techniques that can help you with the feeling of anxiety. Simple breathing exercises are extremely effective, there are many I can teach. There are wonderful visualisation techniques and something called mindfulness which is excellent at training you where to focus your awareness. I also use a technique called anchoring which is a favorite within NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), however I adopt a different method of anchoring which I find is very effective.

People get anxiety over a lot of things, whether its situational (moving house e.g.) or over health concerns. Anxiety over things that happened in the past which still affect the person today because they haven’t released the emotions or they ruminate or dwell on the memories. Anxiety about the future, often called worrying… “what if…”, “what’s going to happen?…”

Of course we cannot predict the future, but we use worry as a way of coping with the thoughts, a sort of preparation of events or things that may happpen. And very often, the anxiety experienced whilst worrying about an event that hasn’t happened yet, is far greater than the anxiety experienced when that event actually happens.

Some anxieties can be a little less common such as ontological anxiety, which is the existence of ones being, so therefore the fear of not being, or extinction. And Ontic anxiety which is formulated around death and fate.

Anxiety is something that can be profound and unsettling and very often it is the result of excessive worry, dread and dwelling on negative things and feelings. We will tackle each feeling and the negative thoughts together over a period of sessions to help you discover a better way of thinking and a more positive emotional state too.
