I work closely with clients to help them achieve their ideal weight by using hypnosis and CBT, sometimes combined together to give lasting results. It is important that you make this change for good, and not just employ a short term strategy. However, there is nothing wrong with a quick fix, and I often help clients achieve weight loss for their holiday or wedding. But for long lasting results we need to look into what is feeding the habit of over eating or eating the wrong types of food (and we all know what they are…), what emotions are you feeling when you eat? Trying to feed an emotion with food doesn’t work, and although it may be nice to momentarily have a snack when you feel low, sad, bored, frustrated etc, it doesn’t do anything other than put additional weight onto your body. So my methods are to deal with these emotions, and I find this has a lasting effect on the weight loss.

So what is it about weight loss that seems to compel us? There may be many reasons for being overweight, however research has shown that our eating habits are exactly that, a habit. Like most habits, they develop over time and become hard wired into the the unconscious mind rather like writing code for a computer. The computer doesn’t have an opinion, nor does it an understanding of what is right and what is wrong; it is either right or it fails to compute.

The interesting thing about the subconscious mind is that it doesn’t know right from wrong. When it is programmed to behave in a certain way it does so until it learns a different way of functioning, a sort of re-code. So if you don’t think about weight loss in a certain way, a positive way, then the subconscious can work against you.

Fact 1

Most people who are overweight don’t realise they could be obese! Check your body mass index using this tool. Then check it against the figures below and you may be surprised.

18.5 to 24.9 – normal

25 to 29.9 – overweight

30 and above – obese

It’s never too late to do something about your weight.

Fact 2

Just over a quarter of adults (26% of both men and women aged 16 or over) were classified as obese in the UK. This represents adults with a BMI of 30 or above. A greater proportion of men than women (42% compared with 32%) were classified as being overweight.

As most overweight people have probably found out the hard way, diets simply fail to live up their initial promises. The individual believes they can do it, and rely on will power alone, however, once they are denied the food they crave or through regimes of starvation, they very quickly return to their old habits, and this often causes a feeling of failure in the individual, knocking back any self esteem gained during the initial stages of the diet. So, the weight loss is short lived.

There may be numerous reasons why a person overeats but until the relationship with food changes and the underlying issue dealt with, they will always face an uphill struggle with their weight.

Fact 3

17% of boys and 15% of girls (aged 2 to 15) were classed as obese, an increase from 11% and 12% respectively since 1995.

Around one in ten pupils in Reception class (aged 4-5 years) were classified as obese (9.4%) which compares to around a fifth of pupils in Year 6 (aged 10-11 years) (19.0%).

Fact 4

Almost every year, more than twice as many females than males were admitted to hospital with a primary diagnosis of obesity.

Obese adults are more likely to have high blood pressure than those in the normal weight group. Being overweight or obese can also shorten life expectancy (how long a person should live). In obese adults over 40 years of age, obesity can shorten life expectancy by 6-7 years.

Direct suggestions within hypnosis can aid the individual to change their habits, but sometimes only for a short period of time. Far more successful, is tackling the issues behind the behavioural disorder and introducing a new behavioural training program… Yikes… a training program! This, to most folk, implies work and they’d be half right. It certainly requires work, but not necessarily hard work, and certainly a lot easier than some of the diet regimes out there!

Exercise! Yes, that’s right, there’s that naughty word most folk dread. Most people shudder when they think of exercise with impregnated images of motivational svelte personal trainers yelling commando style instructions at them. But wait up, walking is exercise, housework is exercise, lifting bags in the supermarket is exercise, we all burn calories by merely existing, even whilst we sleep. So, to achieve weight loss, you need a certain level of activity in your life, any type of hypnosis isn’t magic, it still requires you to do your part, without activity in our lives we need less calories to maintain our weight!

Fact 5

Not exercising in a given week was associated with a 35% incidence of obesity.

As we age, our body’s ability to metabolize food starts to slow and we no longer need as many calories to maintain our weight.

Someone who is in their 40’s may eat the same as they did when they were in their 20’s but still gain weight

Fact 6

People who are more active need more calories to maintain their weight than people who are less active. Interestingly, increased activity in obese individuals tends to reduce their appetite, and helps the body metabolise the fat as an energy source.

So it doesn’t have to be strenuous; walking, cycling and swimming are all wonderful, low impact exercises. And here’s the thing; when you exercise, it not only burns calories it also releases the feel good hormone in the brain called endorphins which do exactly what it says on the tin, makes you feel good.

So, changing the way you view food and exercise helps you achieve that long term goal of permanent reduction in weight!

Hypno-psychotherapy has been proven to help people with their weight management and that’s why we call it management, because we never use the word ‘diet’, this is a management process.

Fact 7

Lack of sleep can contribute to weight gain because if we don’t get enough sleep we place more stress on your body which results in biochemically stored fat. Stress in our daily lives can also increase weight as our bodies go into a kind of survival mode. So we store fat as fuel and our metabolism is slowed down because our bodies are in a constant state of ‘fight or flight’ Hypnotherapy can also help with sleep problems and stress!
