Specific Phobia

Specific Phobia

Specific Phobia is probably the most frequently occurring anxiety disorder with somewhere around 12.5% of the general population confirming one or more distinct phobias throughout their lives. Individuals may possibly dread heights, flying, spiders, blood, water, and any other variety of defined objects or scenarios.   Specific phobias have an effect on close to 19.2 million American adults and are generally doubly prevalent in females as males. They generally manifest in early childhood or during the teenage years and often continue to persist into their adult years.

What causes specific phobic disorders aren’t properly fully understood, there is however some research that this inclination to produce them might run in family members, with the younger generation learning the behavior from the older. If the child perceives that the reaction to a certain object or scenario, by an adult is the correct one, then this adult behavior can be adopted as perfectly rational to the child.

There are numerous theories about how one develops fear, with some theorists such as Freud believing that it is learned behavior as we start off life ‘tabula rasa’ meaning ‘clean slate’ and from there we learn all of our beliefs, conditions and morality, whilst others such as Jung believed that all humans, as well as animals, have an innate amount of predisposed information hard wired into our unconscious from birth. A good example of this was during a study of fear when a chick was raised in captivity from an egg and was never introduced to it’s mother, in lab conditions the scientists cast a shadow on the ceiling of a Hawk flying forwards; in reaction to this, the chick went into distress. However, if the shadow of the hawk was cast travelling backwards across the ceiling, then the chick remained calm. This indicates that the chick was aware of the danger even though it had never encountered a hawk and couldn’t have known that it was dangerous, unless of course, that the threat was hard wired into its brain.

People with specific phobias encounter intense fear the moment they come across a defined scenario or object, to form a phobic stimulus.  For instance, individuals with a specific phobia of dogs will end up stressed and incredibly anxious when forced to encounter a dog, this may have been induced initially by an attack from such an animal, a learned behavior (seeing someone else react negatively to a dog) or perhaps of unknown origin, for example the person saw something frightening, involving a dog, on TV or at the cinema when very young but no longer remember the event.  Phobias can be observed in children, however their subject matter or original stimulus can transform with time, for example, their original moment of fear of any given object or scenario can become distorted over time and the initial sensitizing event becomes forgotten and misunderstood, however, the fear remains at an unconscious level and so the subconscious mind tends to re associate this fear with something new and a link is formed, and of course this new link now becomes even more irrational than the first fear. These symptoms can and generally do, decline with age, but can still affect the individual even if it is to a lesser degree.  If the original fear remains strong and it is accompanied with such avoidance that it becomes debilitating for the sufferer, then the specific phobia must be identified, this can be dealt with using hypnotherapy for specific phobia.

According to the DSM-IV-TR from the American Psychiatric Association phobia’s are catagorised into distinct subtypes:

  • Animal type
  • Natural environmental type  (Thunder, wind, torrential rain etc).
  • Blood-Injection type (Fear of needles etc).
  • Situation type  (fear of bridges, tunnels, public transport etc).
  • Other type (Choking, vomiting, clowns etc).

The DSM IV also diagnoses Specific Phobia when certain criteria are presented:

  • Marked and persistent fear that is excessive or unreasonable, cued by the presence or anticipation of a specific object or situation (EGflying, heights, animals, receiving an injection, or seeing blood)

  • Marked and persistent fear that is excessive or unreasonable, cued by the presence or anticipation of a specific object or situation (EG flying, heights, animals, receiving an injection, or seeing blood)

  • Exposure to the phobic stimulus almost invariably provokes an immediate anxiety response, which may take the form of a situationally bound situationally predisposed panic attack. In children, the anxiety may be expressed by crying tantrums, freezing, or clinging.

  • The person recognises that the fear is excessive or unreasonable

  • The phobic situation is avoided or is endured with intense anxiety or stress

  • The avoidance, anxious anticipation, or distress in the feared situation interferes significantly with the persons normal routine, occupational function, or social activities or relationships, or there is marked distress about having the phobia.

  • In individuals under the age of 18 years, the duration is at least six months.

  • The anxiety, panic attacks, or phobic avoidance associated with specific object or situation are not better accounted for by another mental disorder, such as obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social phobia, panic disorder with agoraphobia, or agoraphobia with out history of panic disorder.

Phobias aren’t purely cognitive errors. They include an extensive array of feelings and influences, and therefore are embodied in sub cortical structures of the brain. Advancements in the understanding of cognitive-affective neuroscience of fearfulness conditioning and extinction (Behaviorism) helps to clarify the pathogenesis of stress and anxiety conditions and could eventually bring about new treatment method solutions. Hypnotherapy for phobias can help the individual reach a point were the actual stimulus of the fear no longer causes concern.

A specific phobia is undoubtedly an extreme, illogical anxiety about something, which in fact poses little if any danger. Individuals with specific phobias could probably ski the earth’s highest mountaintops without difficulty but struggle to exceed the 5th floor of an office building, they could be an extremely good swimmer and yet face high anxiety when crossing water over a bridge. Although adults with phobias understand that these anxieties are not rational, they frequently discover that experiencing, or perhaps imagining about confronting, the scary object or scenario triggers an anxiety attack or intense panic.

If the scary scenario or object is simple to avoid, individuals with specific phobias would possibly not look for support; however, if avoidance inhibits their working or private day-to-day lives, it could possibly become debilitating and treatment methods are typically pursued.

Specific phobias react effectively to properly focused psychotherapy and hypnotherapy.

At Evolution, we use hypnotherapy for phobias but we also incorporate CBT into the hypnosis work to help eliminate your fears once and for all.  If the actual fear is unknown, then some regression work can be incorporated to find the initial sensitizing event that cause the distress. This can then be dealt with.

There are so many phobias and so many causes, so please don’t feel embarrassed about talking to us about it. Below you will find a list of many phobia’s. If you suffer from any one of these conditions, just drop us a line and we can arrange to have a chat about it.
