Memory repression in cases of PTSD

Scientific investigations demonstrates that our memory retention is more solid and holds up the longest the second our emotions are raised. This serves to explain reasons why a number of us will almost certainly recall every moment of our wedding or even our initial drivers test, for example.

It possibly is also valid for our remembrances of traumatic events that include childhood abuse as well as one off occurrences like terrifying injury or harm.

Psychic trauma and childhood abuse appear engraved in peoples minds, while information and facts, such as calling up the Capitol cities of the world, is to a greater extent promptly blanked out. Frequently, therapy strategies utilized in the procedure of PTSD (or even other mental disorders, that include depressive disorder and panic or anxiety, which will typically have a relationship with distressing memories), presuppose that painful memories are possibly the hardest to let go of.

Today, fresh scientific research appears to imply for those who really need to blank out a painful memory,  genuinely can be able to so.
It is possible that we could train ourselves to command our remembrance in pretty much the same manner as we can command our motor neurological impulses.

Electroencephalogram photographs of a typical human brain signifies that the exact same portions of the human brain are actuated when ever we discontinue our motor impulses as in cases where we repress a memory. It is noted that, just as we could potentially practise confining motor impulses, we may also positively train ourselves to subdue memories and possibly even block those distressing or traumatic occurrences from the mind.

Generally, science supposes that our own less-necessary recollections are rubed out when most current incidents or other info require fresh space in which to etch fresher memories. But emotionally charged recollections (both positive or even negative) appear to mulishly cling on, and usually, just as the specific situation of POSTTRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER, begin to obsess us.

Experienced psychotherapists and their clientele notice that unpleasant memories might also be repressed or suppressed to the degree of almost total forgetfulness. In many examples, clients could very well have re experience some of these unpleasant memories to be able to arrive at a deeper reasoning behind why they actually feel & react the way that they do. When exposing these painful memories, they usually appear so new and crude that they would be able to, in essence, be re traumatized once more.

Traumatised clients frequently have a really hard time trying to get on with daily living, not to mention the task they need to carry out in order to determine and settle distressing memories. This is why so many experienced therapist who assist affected individuals of psychic trauma and childhood abuse favor to, at the outset, hone in on aiding the client establish coping skills in advance of revealing and researching the unpleasant past.

It can be observed that not all incapacity to manage daily is connected with a painful memory. Often a good number of years of negative, maladaptive influencing buildup.

A hint regarding psychic trauma, memory, and coping skills : Supposing you are caught up in the trauma somehow (such as a family member, close friend or maybe therapist), with an individual who appears to be obstinately clinging on to an unpleasant memory, theres a correct manner and a incorrect manner to assist them.

It all boils down to a thin line between lightly but repeatedly supporting a client in their endeavours to construct proactive managing skills and or a greater beneficial outlook, or simply advising them to get over it now trudge on. The foremost is dedicated to the requirements of the client who is afflicted ; the latter is regarding your demands.

Addiction Debate on Radio 5 Live

I listened to a really good debate about addiction on radio 5 live today. There was a differing of opinion with some saying that you can get addicted to anything, including your phone or even being Grumpy?

this raised many questions about whether it is classed as addiction or obsession and the difference between them.

I suppose for me, an addiction is something which rules and in many cases, ruins your life and those close to you. This is because an addict can’t function without the addiction, rather than simply being obsessed by something or forming a habit for example.

Is someone who permanently uses their iPhone addicted in the same way a heroin addict or a compulsive gambler functions on a daily basis?

Maybe they are, maybe they are not, but it is an interesting question.

There is more info on addiction over on the BBC website

There has been a lot of talk about hypnosis in the news recently. First there were the great reports on how hypnosis can help expectant mothers to have a natural, stress free and more comfortable birth, and now, more recently in the news are the reports on how successful hypnotherapy can be along side other forms of health services provided by the NHS.

With this report there was another article from the Independent reporting that too many cowboy hypnotherapists could spoil this alliance. And although the article had a negative slant, it did highlight the need for statutory regulation. However it is important to remember that there are a lot of great practitioners out there so always look for the CNHC label and make sure of the therapists credentials.

Here is a snippet of a recent release from the CNHC news letter:

The Royal Society of Medicine (RSM) is calling for hypnosis to be taken out of the hands of ‘cowboys’ and put into the hands of properly trained medically qualified practitioners.

The RSM acknowledges that hypnosis is an extremely useful tool that can be used alongside mainstream medicine. It warns that the public should be protected from inadequately qualified practitioners.

CNHC Hypnotherapy Profession Specific Board (PSB) member John Lawrence said: “We agree with the RSM that ‘cowboys’ should not be used. This means those who are unqualified and not fit to practise because the public should be protected from inadequately qualified practitioners. Fortunately, all CNHC registered hypnotherapists abide by a strict ethical code and a number of hypnotherapists are fellows of the RSM. Robust regulation for hypnotherapists already exists in the CNHC and I am sure the medical profession will continue to refer to CNHC registered practitioners.”

“The only way to get rid of ‘back street’ therapists is by ensuring they have a credible ‘shop front’ through registration with CNHC.”

Is obesity all in the mind?

There may be many reasons for obesity however research has shown that our eating habits are exactly that, a habit. Like most habits, they develop over time and become hard wired into the the unconscious mind rather like writing code for a computer. The computer doesn’t have an opinion, nor does it an understanding of what it right and what is wrong; it is either right or it fails to compute.

The interesting thing about the subconscious mind is that it doesn’t know right from wrong. When it is programmed to behave in a certain way it does so until it learns a different way of functioning, a sort of re-code.

As most overweight people have probably found out the hard way, diets simply fail to live up their initial promises. The individual believes they can do it, and rely on will power alone, however, once they are denied the food they crave or through regimes of starvation, they very quickly return to their old habits, and this often causes a feeling of failure in the individual, knocking back any self esteem gained during the initial stages of the diet.

There may be numerous reasons why a person overeats but until the relationship with food changes and the underlying issue dealt with, they will always face an uphill struggle with their weight.

Direct suggestions within hypnosis can aid the individual to change their habits, but sometimes only for a short period of time. Far more successful, is tackling the issues behind the behavioural disorder and introducing a new behavioural training program… Yikes… a training program! This, to most folk, implies hard work and they’d be half right. It certainly requires work, but not necessarily hard work, and certainly no harder than some of the diet regimes out there!

Exercise! Yes, that’s right, there’s that naughty word most folk dread. Most people shudder when they think of exercise with impregnated images of motivational svelte personal trainers yelling commando style instructions at you. But wait up, walking is exercise, housework is exercise, lifting bags in the supermarket is exercise, we all burn calories by merely existing, even whilst we sleep.

So it doesn’t have to be strenuous, walking, cycling and swimming are all wonderful, low impact exercises. And here’s the thing; when you exercise, it not only burns calories it also releases the feel good hormone in the brain called endorphins which do what it says on the tin, makes you feel good.

So, changing the way you view food and exercise helps you achieve that long term goal of permanent weight loss!

Hypno-psychotherapy has been proved to help people with their weight management and that’s why we call it management, because we never use the word ‘diet’.

Personally I would never consider jumping on the Hypnotic gastric band wagon as I believe it is unnecessary to put a client through a mental operation where it perceived that actual surgery is taking place. This is just suggestion hypnotherapy, and as I mentioned earlier, it may work for some but its not really getting to the nub of why the person is overweight.

Which ever way you choose to lose your weight I truly wish you the best of luck and happy health.
